The production offers a compressed version of the royal accession story that, in this version, runs nearly four hours. It is an opportunity to experience Ian McKellen’s unbridled love of performance. “Player Kings” — which runs at the Noël Coward Theater through June 22, before touring England — is the latest in a wave of recent high-profile Shakespeare productions in London. Uniquely among the other great British theater actors of his generation, McKellen still returns year after year to the stage, recently tackling Lear for a second time and playing an octogenarian Hamlet. In the “sweet creature of bombast” that is this play’s John Falstaff, McKellen has an especially juicy assignment — an outsized character whose appetite for life matches the actor’s own gusto.

OLNEY, England (AP) — Women in matching checkered aprons, headscarves and a rainbow of running shoes limbered up Tuesday as they prepared for the centuries-old pancake race in this English country town. The race is held the day before the start of Lent, the Christian period of repentance and sacrifice before Easter. “You just have to go flat out and then hope that you’re not gonna fall over. … But it’s good fun.”Thousands of miles away later in the day, women in the town of Liberal, Kansas, prepared to take on Olney in their own race. Two Kansas sisters who competed in Liberal since they were children traveled to Olney this year to see where it all began.

CNN —After 26 years in business, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is closing due to costs becoming too expensive – for both customers and the restaurant operators. Deanes EIPIC, the flagship fine dining restaurant of an empire started by Northern Irish chef Michael Deane in the 1990s, won its first Michelin star within a year of opening as Deanes in 1997. ‘The cost has spiralled out of control’“EIPIC as a whole wasn’t a restaurant that was dying,” he says, but “people have an expectation when walking through the doors. EIPIC follows the classic fine-dining model upon which many a Michelin star has been earned throughout Europe and beyond. Says Greene, “people are willing to travel from the city or anywhere for good food and good accommodation.

A year after Truss' chaotic mini-budget of tax cuts roiled financial markets and led to her ultimate resignation, crowds gathered in their droves on the fringes of the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester to hear the ex-leader deliver her economic vision for Britain. Truss was voted into power last year by Conservative Party members, whose number is estimated around 160,000 — or 0.3% of the U.K. population. In the latter part of Michael Gambon’s long and storied acting career, some of the most animated analyses of his performances could be found not in theater or film reviews, but in forums for the “Harry Potter” fandom, where dedicated Hogwarts obsessives would dissect his every onscreen utterance as the wizard Albus Dumbledore. It wasn’t originally his role. Richard Harris, the eminent actor who was originally cast, died after filming the second “Harry Potter” movie. Several other well-known actors were initially considered to succeed Harris in the role, including McKellen, who demurred, and Peter O'Toole, who turned it down because of his long, close friendship with Harris. In the end the choice was Gambon, whose family said Thursday that he had died.

Remote workers are doing anything but work in the afternoons. Elena Noviello/Getty ImagesThere are few topics in corporate America as polarizing as remote work. AdvertisementAdvertisementLengthy, expensive office leases might also discourage companies from embracing remote work. As Aki's story points out, that type of rationale from larger companies has created an opportunity for those willing to support remote work. A company's commitment to remote work might not be forever, even if employees view it that way.

‘Happy Valley’ Review: The End of the Hero’s Journey
  + stars: | 2023-05-19 | by ( Mike Hale | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
She’s a contemporary knight errant, upholding a code of decency against the terrors of modern life. “Happy Valley,” whose final season premieres on Monday (streaming on Acorn TV and AMC+, broadcast on BBC America), is a pocket-size, prosaic saga — a hero’s tale contained in three six-episode seasons and embedded in a family drama. Like all mythical heroes, Cawood has an antagonist, the psychopathic rapist and killer Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), who is the father of her grandson. In its structure, “Happy Valley” is very much a traditional British crime series, with seemingly unconnected plot strands and investigations that wind themselves together against a backdrop of cop-shop politics. In the new season’s major subplot, a less-than-sympathetic female character is caught between two seemingly more capable men whose weaknesses run deeper than hers.
Sunak has made reviving the economy one of his five key priorities, after Britain's gross domestic product only regained its pre-pandemic size in February. Sunak, a former investment banker, along with finance minister Jeremy Hunt and business minister Kemi Badenoch will speak at a series of events on Monday to more than 200 executives representing sectors including technology and manufacturing. "We are bringing together some of the UK's biggest companies and investors for meaningful dialogue – and I'm a prime minister passionate about working with business to unlock opportunity and progress," Sunak said in a statement. In what his office called his first ever LinkedIn Live event, business leaders will on Monday morning also have the opportunity to ask Sunak questions about business policy. The prime minister will unveil an innovation category at the Great British Entrepreneur Awards on Monday evening, hosted by the finance minister at Downing Street.
London Stock Exchange urges rapid UK reforms after Arm's snub

LONDON, March 3 (Reuters) - The London Stock Exchange said on Friday that chip designer Arm's decision to pursue a U.S.-only listing this year rather than return to London's stock market showed Britain needed to speed up plans for regulatory and market reforms. Arm, owned by Japan's SoftBank (9984.T), is to pursue a U.S.-only listing this year, dashing the British government's hopes that the tech giant would choose London. "Arm is a great British company and a world leader in their field which we continue to believe can be very well served by the UK capital markets," said Julia Hoggett, chief executive of London Stock Exchange plc, part of London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG.L). Arm has not completely ruled out an eventual London listing and has said it intends to consider a subsequent IPO there in due course, without providing further details. On Thursday, Dublin-based building materials group CRH (CRH.L) had announced a decision to its primary listing from London to the United States.

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan 19 (Reuters) - British Labour Party leader Keir Starmer set out his green growth plan in Davos on Thursday and criticised British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for not showing up at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum. "Somebody has got to be an ambassador for Britain and the prime minister and the chancellor are not here," she told a separate audience referring to finance minister Jeremy Hunt. "We are here to send a message that at the next election ... the British economy will be open for business again." Although Sunak did not attend the event, the British government did send Trade Minister Kemi Badenoch and Business Minister Grant Shapps to Davos. And former Prime Minister Boris Johnson also made an appearance, which he used to urge Britain's allies to double down on sending military equipment to Ukraine.
Those questions and comments rolled in for the celebrity chef Alison Roman on Wednesday after she tweeted that she owns an induction stove "by choice." Induction units are five to 10% more energy efficient than conventional electric stoves, and three times more efficient than gas stoves. Copper or aluminum cookware won't work on an induction stove — magnetic metals like cast iron and some stainless steels are best. The majority of US homes already use conventional electric stoves, while about 38% use gas stoves, according to the US Energy Information Administration. The Inflation Reduction Act authorized an $840 rebate for low- and middle-income households that don't already have an electric stove.
No one’s goose gets cooked during “ Mary Berry ’s Ultimate Christmas” and why is that? But geese are actually greasy, relatively meatless and too busy polluting public parks to make an appearance on TV. Besides, their absence is reassuring: The English may have given us our traditional Christmas celebration. And that’s what the merry Ms. Berry makes the main attraction of the elaborate meal she prepares—and more importantly plans for—in this hourlong tutorial on the art of the holiday. The music is a bit insistent about creating a mood, but Ms. Berry’s enthusiasm is real and never wavers.

We appreciate everything he’s done for Bake Off, from working in Covid bubbles to supporting the bakers. It’s been a pleasure”. “Bake Off” personalities Paul Hollywood and Dame Prue also tweeted their appreciation for Lucas, who acted as co-host on “The Great British Baking Show” since 2020, as well as spinoff series “The Great British Baking Show: Holidays,” “The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice,” and “The Great Celebrity Bake Off for SU2C.”No announcement has yet been made regarding who will replace Lucas in upcoming seasons in the “Bake Off” universe.
Scott Bryan used Twitter to build a career as a journalist writing and commentating about TV. He fears Musk's takeover will drive people from the platform, which would deny others its benefits. For people interested in entering journalism, Twitter provides a network of pretty much every single editor and journalist in the country. Beyond my following, I use Twitter to sense how much the wider public is reacting to a new TV story. My tweets show editors and producers what I'm knowledgeable about and have led to invitations to go on radio and TV.
And that's not to mention that employees are preparing for layoffs after Twitter leaders and VPs made lists of who to keep. Twitter employees expect layoffs to begin very soon. By Saturday afternoon, they handed Elon Musk lists of employees "to keep," two people said. Elon Musk fired Twitter execs "for cause" in a bid to avoid paying out tens of millions in severance. Among this year's biggest losers are those who've invested heavily in the metaverse (Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg) and crypto (Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao).
